In 6th grade, students are expected to compose a narrative which develops characters, a setting, a conflict, and comes to a clear resolution.
Parts of a narrative include:
Exposition = beginning of the story which introduces the characters, setting, and main conflict
Rising Action = events that build up to the climax
Climax = character comes face to face with the main conflict; outcome is predictable at this point; turning point in the story
Falling action = the events that occur after the climax
Resolution = end of the story where the conflict has been resolved and loose ends are tied up
The key to writing a strong narrative is really keying in on the important descriptive
details that will keep a reader engaged in the plot. We practice this is class by
"exploding a moment" and "zooming in" on a particular piece of time within the plot.
After several in-class practice writings, the students will then be assessed on their
ability to write an entire narrative following one of the famous Harris Burdick
illustrations.
