Learning TARGETS
Compare and contrast the formation of rock types – igneous,
metamorphic, and sedimentary –and demonstrate the similarities and differences
using the rock cycle.
Explain how physical and chemical weathering lead to erosion and the
formation of soils and sediments.
Explain how waves, wind, water, and glacial movement shape and reshape
the land surface of the Earth by eroding rock in some areas and depositing
sediments in other areas.
Describe how soil is a mixture, made up of weather-eroded rock and
decomposed organic material, water, and air.

Weathering & Erosion
Weathering is the process where rock is dissolved, worn away, or broken down into smaller and smaller pieces. There are two types of weathering: chemical and physical. Check out this website! http://www.onegeology.org/extra/kids/earthprocesses/weathering.html

Physical (Mechanical) Weathering:
- Root wedging - caused by plants
- Ice wedging - caused by temperature changes
- Abrasion - caused by wind
Chemical Weathering:
- Acid rain - caused by pollution
- Rust/oxidation- caused by air and oxygen

Soil
Soil, which we often refer to as dirt, is one of our most important resources. Plants, which provide food, oxygen, and many other things for us, require soil for nutrients. Soil is a mixture that is made up of the following four main "ingredients":
W = Water
A = Air
M = Minerals (weathered rock)
O = Organic material
W = Water
A = Air
M = Minerals (weathered rock)
O = Organic material
